Miss June is a punk band from Auckland Central. Consisting of Annabel Liddell (vocals, rhythm guitar), James Park (lead guitar), Chris Marshall (bass) and Tom Leggett (drums). Described as "some unholy matrimony between Sonic Youth and Le Tigre".[1][2]
History[]
Formation (2013-2014)[]
Miss June first formed in late 2013 when Annabel Liddell recruited University of Auckland Jazz School students James Park, Chris Marshall, and Tom Leggett to support her solo performance at Bloodfeast festival.[3]
On the 19th of February 2014, the band released "Pixelated (So Curious)", their first demo.[4]
On the 30th of August 2014, 95bFM posted the first of two In Session performances at Roundhead Studios, performing new songs "Drool" and "Matriarchy".[5][6]
Foo Fighters & Matriarchy (2015)[]
The Foo Fighters, having seen Miss June's In Session videos and looking for female musicians, picked Miss June to open for them at their Mt. Smart Stadium show on the 21st of February 2015 alongside Rise Against.[7][8]
On the 7th of April 2015, the band self-released their debut EP Matriarchy.[9][10][11][12]
The EP received very positive reviews from Happy Mag[13] and the Otago Daily Times,[14] a 4/5 from Sputnik Music[15] and LetsSingIt,[16] and a dismissive review from Chloe Cairncross of NZ Musician.[17]
The EP's release was accompanied by a national New Zealand tour, playing in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, and Auckland; alongside Astro Children, Hans Pucket, Maple Syrup, Soda Boyz, New Gum Sarn, and P.H.F..[18][19] The band also played a secret all-ages Auckland show, with several bands from the Auckland all-ages scene such as Charlie Freak, Desperate Models and Courtney Hate.[20]
Singles & further success (2016-2018)[]
On the 3rd of March 2016, the band played at Newtown Festival in Wellington.[2] On the 4th of July 2016, "Anxiety On Repeat" featured on a split 7" with Astro Children.[21][22][23]
On the 7th of July 2017, the band released an animated music video for new single "I Don't Wanna Be Your Dog", a "derivative anti-anthem" to The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog".[24]
Debut album (2018-Present)[]
On the 7th of May 2018, the band released the first single, "Twitch", from their as-yet-untitled debut album.[25][26][27] “The song is about the first time I operated on a living human being and how different this was to operating on a cadaver. I brought the lyrics and music to the boys and a year later it became the beautiful specimen it is today.”[28]
The band played at The Others Way 2018 on the 31st of August,[29] before playing at Australia's Bigsound Festival on the 5th and 6th of September.[30] On the 13th of September 2018, the band opened for The Beths' Future Me Hates Me album release tour Auckland show at Neck of the Woods.[31][32] Shortly after, on the 30th of September 2018, the band opened for Wolf Alice at the Powerstation.[33]
Miss June's debut album is set for release sometime in 2019.[34][35] The band played at St. Jerome's Laneway Festival 2019 on the 28th of January,[36] and is set to play at Splore 2019 alongside The Beths.[37]
