Matriarchy is the debut EP by Auckland Central punk quartet Miss June . Self-released on the 7th of April 2015.
Background[]
Miss June first formed in late 2013 when Annabel Liddell recruited University of Auckland jazz school students James Park, Chris Marshall, and Tom Leggett to support her solo performance at Bloodfeast festival.[1]
On the 30th of August 2014, 95bFM posted the first of two In Session performances at Roundhead Studios, debuting new songs "Drool" and "Matriarchy".[2][3]
The EP was recorded and mixed at Munki Studios by James Goldsmith, produced by Goldsmith, Liddell and Andrew Wilson, and mastered by Chris Townend.[4] The EP's lyrical material is largely written about issues with relationships, misogyny and student loans, and was released on the 7th of April 2015.[5][6][7][8]
The EP was recorded entirely with gear borrowed from Wellington sludge metal four-piece Beastwars.[9]
Release tour & reception[]
The EP's release was accompanied by a national New Zealand tour, playing in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, and Auckland; alongside Astro Children, Hans Pucket, Maple Syrup, Soda Boyz, New Gum Sarn, and P.H.F..[10][11] The band also played a secret all-ages Auckland show, with several bands from the Auckland all-ages scene such as Charlie Freak, Desperate Models and Courtney Hate.[12]
The EP received very positive reviews from Happy Mag[13] and the Otago Daily Times,[14] a 4/5 from Sputnik Music[15] and LetsSingIt,[16] and a dismissive review from Chloe Cairncross of NZ Musician.[17]
