Made in Nippon is the debut album by Auckland Central indie rock band Charlie Freak. Released on the 13th of December 2015 on cassette through Sticks and Stone Records.
Background & recording[]
For most of mid to late 2015, Charlie Freak was on hiatus after a breakup post on Facebook.
Without any warning, the band released their debut album, Made in Nippon, on the 13th of December 2015.[1] The album was released on cassette through Sticks and Stone Records, limited to a pressing of 100 copies.[2]
The album is named after Made in Nippon, a Japanese grocery store on Queen Street that is permanently closed, and has a rehearsal space above it where the band wrote the songs on the album. Drums were recorded by Darryn Paterson-Harkness at Platform Studios; guitars, bass and vocals were recorded by Ethan Moore and Charlie Freak at DP Studios, Burgoyne Tea House and Platform Studios; all songs were mixed and mastered by Scott Seabright at Roundhead Studios.[3]
Exactly one month later, on the 13th of January 2016, the band uploaded a music video for "Tears Enough", directed by Matt Hunter.[4][5] On that same day, they were Mac DeMarco's support band at King's Arms tavern with Yukon Era.[6]
