Iris Guevarra, known professionally as Iris G, is a singer/songwriter from Avondale, West Auckland.
History[]
Iris Guevarra's earliest musical memory was a karaoke rendition of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears at age 7.[1]
Musical start (2014-2015)[]
Guevarra began posting acoustic original songs on YouTube. On the 10th of July 2014, her first original song "In the Stars" was posted,[2] followed by covers of Matt Corby, Tim Buckley, and Lana Del Rey throughout 2015.[3][4]
Smokefree Rockquest & Supernova (2016)[]
On the 29th of June 2016, Guevarra uploaded her Smokefree Rockquest submission video, featuring the songs "If Looks Could Kill", "Mitosis", "Leilani" and "Supernova", recorded by Karin Yamasaki and Keria Paterson.
Guevarra won the 2016 solo/duo category of the Smokefree Rockquest competition.[1][5] As part of her prize, she released her debut single "Supernova".[6][7] Produced by Ruby Frost and Djeisan Suskov of LEISURE and with a music video made by Imaginary Friends and directed by Dave Thomson.[8]
Parachute Music & regular performing (2016-2017)[]
On the 25th of June 2016, Guevarra played at Frisson, a 40-Hour Famine fundraiser event by the Crescendo Trust of Aotearoa alongside Title Pending, Braith Laughs and Angels of Troy.[9]
Guevarra signed to Parachute Music in 2016, a Christian record label that discouraged her about being public about her sexuality. Throughout the Labour Party's 2017 political campaign, Guevarra performed at several Labour Party events at ZEAL and Corban Estate alongside Cameron McCurdy, and campaigned for LGBTQI+ rights and representation, mental health services, assault survivors, and women's rights to the present politicians.[10] She also opened up about her mental health, specifically depression and social anxiety in an interview with Tearaway.[11]
On the 14th of October 2017, Guevarra played at UFO alongside Drive By Faders, Title Pending and The Knee High Socks.[12] On the 13th of November 2017, Guevarra was featured on NZ Musician's YouTube account for a live session of her song "Time" performed at The Wine Cellar.[13]
Big Gay Out performances & recording (2018-Present)[]
On the 17th of February 2018, Guevarra played at Auckland Council's Music in Parks with Miloux, Randa and Daffodils.[14]
Guevarra performed at The Big Gay Out 2018, as well as at The Big Gay Out 2019.[15] Her 2019 performance was her first performance without her guitar and featuring DJ Ulberg, where she debuted new beats made by Ulberg and producer Mr•O6OO.[15]
Guevarra has been working on her debut EP since early 2018, and it is scheduled for release sometime in 2019.
