Courtney Hate was an alternative rock band from Titirangi, West Auckland from 2014 to 2017. Consisting of Jami Kerrigan (vocals), Ruby Colwell (guitar), Marieke van Orsoy de Flines (bass) and Xanthe Brookes (drums).
History[]
Formation (2014)[]
Courtney Hate began in music class at Green Bay High School. The original iteration was a casual band named Lioness & the Bunnettes, which featured a rotating list of members including Bethan Hunter and Demelza Jackson. The band settled on the lineup of Kerrigan, Colwell, van Orsoy de Flines and Brookes and named themselves after Courtney Love.[1]
Smokefree Rockquest (2014-2016)[]
The band played at the 2014 Smokefree Rockquest national finals as the co-winners of the people's choice award, after coming third at the West Auckland regional final.[2] At the band's first Rockquest performance, they played the never released first song they ever wrote, "Barbie Parts", named after their namesake's band Hole's song "Doll Parts".[1]
The band played live regularly on 95bFM, often playing never released songs, "Sleezoid", "Scrublet" and "Creepazoid". These songs are featured in the band's 2015 Smokefree Rockquest video entry,[3] which landed the band a spot at the national finals alongside The Big Gus, Joe Says No and Joe's Van.[2][4][5]
Courtney Hate were a large part of the Auckland all-ages scene, playing regularly gigs with the aforementioned Rockquest finalists, as well as Title Pending, Host Club, Yukon Era,[6] Charlie Freak,[6] Miss June[7] and Mermaidens.[8] Around this time the band played at Play It Strange's the Rolling Stones tribute event, and received two standing ovations, as well as playing at the ZEAL Festival of Noise.
On the 2nd of September 2016, the Courtney Hate played The Others Way Festival, along with Voom and Hex.[9][8] On the 29th of September 2016, Courtney Hate performed live at Vector Arena for the Silver Scrolls awards, covering nominee Street Chant's song "Pedestrian Support League".[10]
Sleepwalking (2016)[]
On the 18th of December 2016, the band released their only EP, Sleepwalking,[11] after a release show on the 16th of December with support from Roidz, Soda Boyz and Randa.[12] The EP was well received by the Auckland music community, with a 4-star review from Sputnik,[13] and coverage from Undertheradar[14] and 95bFM.[1]
Breakup (2017)[]
On the 4th of February 2017, the band played at Eyegum Music Collective's "A Gathering in the Forest" without bassist van Orsoy de Flines, with Lachie Smith and Christian Dimick filling in.[15] Courtney Hate played with Clap Clap Riot and The Beths for Auckland Council's Music in Parks on the 18th of February 2017[16] announcing they were "pretty sure this will be our last show for at least 8 months". The band has not performed since.
Future projects (2018-Present)[]
Brookes formed emo duo Baby Flame with ex-boyfriend and occasional live Courtney Hate bassist Lachie Smith in 2018, they have performed live on 95bFM and Blu Fish's Shments EP release show.
